Abstract
Supporting Angola's Silver Mining with High-Performance Slurry Pumps - The Win-Win Cooperation Between Xingou Slurry Pumps and an Angolan Silver Mine
As an important medium-to-large silver mining enterprise in Angola, located in Huambo Province (a core mineral-producing area in central Angola), the silver mine is engaged in silver ore mining, grinding and flotation separation operations, playing a positive role in promoting the local mining industry and economic recovery after the civil war. Slurry transportation is a core link in its ore processing process, involving crushed ore slurry transportation, flotation pulp circulation and tailings disposal. However, the mine’s long-term use of conventional slurry pumps led to frequent failures and high operational costs—until it established cooperative relations with us and adopted our high-performance slurry pumps equipped with wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant flow parts. This cross-border cooperation effectively solved the mine’s operational pain points and achieved stable and efficient production.
Combined with Angola’s local silver ore characteristics, tropical grassland climate and the mine’s production conditions, the core challenges faced in slurry transportation were clear and realistic: the local silver ore contains a certain amount of sulfide minerals, and the slurry formed after grinding is slightly acidic (pH 5.0-6.0), with weak corrosiveness; the slurry contains hard gangue particles (particle size up to 3.5mm), fine silver ore particles (< 0.074mm) accounting for 65%, and solid content fluctuating between 42% and 62%. In addition, Angola has a typical tropical grassland climate, with distinct dry and wet seasons—annual average temperature of 24-29℃, high humidity in the wet season (October to April of the next year) and frequent rainfall, which easily causes moisture damage to pump unit electrical components; the dry season (May to September) is accompanied by heavy morning fog, leading to poor working environment and increased equipment wear[3]. The conventional slurry pumps previously used by the mine had obvious defects: the flow parts were made of common materials, which could not resist the combined action of weak acid corrosion and high-hardness particle scouring, requiring replacement every 1.2 months; the sealing system was not moisture-proof, leading to frequent slurry leakage and electrical component failures; 6-9 monthly unplanned shutdowns reduced production efficiency by 18% and caused monthly losses of about $80,000. The mine urgently needed a reliable slurry pump solution suitable for local working conditions.
After in-depth communication and understanding of the mine’s predicament, we focused on its core demand for slurry pumps with wear resistance, corrosion resistance and moisture resistance, and recommended our customized high-performance slurry pump solution. Different from other suppliers that only provided standardized products remotely, we dispatched a professional technical team composed of 2 senior mining slurry engineers (with over 11 years of experience in silver mine slurry transportation and tropical environment equipment application) to the Huambo silver mine for a 7-day in-depth on-site investigation. The team collected over 900 sets of key operational data (slurry acidity, particle size distribution, concentration, transportation pressure, ambient temperature and humidity) using professional testing equipment, and conducted on-site corrosion and wear tests on conventional pump flow parts, confirming that our customized slurry pumps and matching flow parts could perfectly adapt to the local harsh working conditions.
To thoroughly solve the mine’s slurry transportation problems, we designed a targeted customized solution focusing on practicality and adaptability, combined with the structural advantages of slurry pumps and material characteristics: the core equipment adopted our horizontal centrifugal slurry pump (model: 10/8ST-AH), a mature and reliable model suitable for medium and high concentration, high wear slurry transportation, featuring wide flow channels, strong anti-clogging performance and high operational stability, which can fully meet the slurry transportation demand of silver ore flotation process (flow range 60-250 m³/h, head 18-45 m); the flow parts (impeller, pump casing, guard plate) adopted high-chromium alloy (Cr27Ni3Mo2) material, a high-performance wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant material recognized in the industry, with hardness up to HRC 65-68, which can effectively resist the scouring of high-hardness gangue particles and the weak acid corrosion of slurry, fundamentally solving the problem of frequent replacement of conventional pump flow parts; we optimized the pump’s sealing system and electrical protection structure—adopting a moisture-proof and corrosion-resistant mechanical seal (fluorine rubber + silicon carbide) to avoid slurry leakage and seal aging caused by high humidity, and adding a special moisture-proof cover to the electrical control part to adapt to the high-humidity and rainy environment in Angola’s wet season; in addition, we optimized the hydraulic model of the pump to improve the adaptability to variable concentration slurry, reducing energy consumption by 11% compared with conventional pumps.
In the production and assembly process of the slurry pumps, we strictly followed international standards and strict quality control specifications, focusing on product quality and adaptability to tropical climate. The high-chromium alloy flow parts were subjected to high-temperature smelting and precision processing, with uniform material density and no internal defects, ensuring excellent wear resistance and corrosion resistance; each pump was subjected to 72-hour continuous full-load performance tests before shipment, simulating the actual working conditions of the mine’s slightly acidic, high-concentration slurry and high-humidity environment, to ensure that all parameters such as flow rate, head, efficiency, wear resistance and corrosion resistance fully met the design requirements and the mine’s production needs. We also strengthened the packaging protection of the pump to avoid damage during long-distance transportation from China to Angola, and took moisture-proof measures for electrical components to adapt to the humid environment during transportation.
Our professional on-site service ensured the smooth implementation of the solution: the technical team arrived at the mine site synchronously with the equipment, completed the installation and commissioning of all slurry pumps in 3 days, and focused on guiding the mine’s operation and maintenance staff on the correct installation, debugging and daily maintenance methods of the pump, especially the maintenance points of high-chromium alloy flow parts and moisture-proof protection of electrical components; they provided 7-day on-site training, covering the performance characteristics of the slurry pump model, the wear and corrosion mechanism of high-chromium alloy materials, common fault judgment and handling methods, helping the staff master the key operation and maintenance skills. The team stayed on-site for 4 days in the initial operation period to track the pump’s operation status, adjust parameters in time according to the actual slurry concentration and ambient humidity changes, and ensure stable operation.
In view of Angola’s geographical characteristics, imperfect local transportation and maintenance conditions, we established a targeted after-sales service mechanism: providing 24-hour online technical support, with a response time of no more than 2 hours, to solve common operational problems through remote guidance; for the replacement of high-chromium alloy flow parts and other wearing parts, we coordinated with local logistics partners in Angola to ensure timely supply and on-site service within 96 hours. When the mine encountered sudden slurry acidity increase (pH dropped to 4.8) during the wet season, our slurry pumps still operated stably without corrosion, and the technical team solved the problem in 7 hours through remote parameter adjustment and on-site guidance, minimizing production losses. We also provided guidance on daily moisture-proof maintenance of the pump to help the mine adapt to the seasonal climate changes.
Up to now, the high-performance slurry pumps equipped with high-chromium alloy flow parts we provided have operated stably for over 14 months, achieving practical and remarkable results: the unplanned shutdown times of the mine have been reduced by 89%, and the monthly shutdown times have been controlled within 1 time; the service life of the pump flow parts has been extended to over 13 months, 10 times longer than that of conventional pumps, greatly reducing the cost of spare parts replacement and maintenance; the pump’s operational efficiency has reached 81%, which is 9% higher than that of conventional pumps, ensuring the continuity of the silver ore flotation process; the annual cost savings of the mine in spare parts, maintenance and energy consumption exceed $880,000, with an investment return rate of 260%. The pumps have good adaptability, can stably operate under the conditions of slurry solid content fluctuation (±5%) and pH fluctuation (4.8-6.0), and can effectively resist the impact of high-humidity and rainy environment, winning high recognition from the mine’s management and technical team.
This cooperation fully demonstrates the excellent performance of our high-performance slurry pumps and high-chromium alloy flow parts in silver mine slurry transportation, as well as our professional ability to solve customer core pain points according to local working conditions. The Angolan silver mine has become our core cooperative customer in Southern Africa, and has actively recommended our slurry pumps to other local silver and gold mining enterprises, laying a solid foundation for us to expand the Angolan and even Southern African mining market.
With rich experience in the R&D, production and overseas service of slurry pumps, we are committed to providing customized, reliable and cost-effective slurry transportation solutions for global silver mining enterprises, especially focusing on adapting to the unique climate and ore characteristics of different regions such as Angola, overcoming geographical and environmental challenges with professionalism, and creating practical value for customers in the post-war recovery and industrial development process.
