Abstract
Peru Copper Mine - Solving High-Abrasion Slurry Transportation with XAH High-Efficiency Slurry Pumps
A large copper mine located in the Andes Mountains of Peru’s Antofagasta Region is one of the core copper-producing enterprises in South America, engaging in large-scale open-pit copper mining, crushing and flotation operations. As a key link in the copper ore processing process, slurry transportation faces severe challenges due to the local harsh ore characteristics and geographical environment. Before cooperating with us, the mine had long been troubled by inefficient slurry transportation and high maintenance costs, which restricted the improvement of production capacity.
The core challenges of the mine were concentrated in the high abrasiveness and high concentration of the slurry: the copper ore contains a large amount of hard quartz gangue, with particle size up to 5mm, fine copper ore particles (< 0.074mm) accounting for 68%, and slurry solid content stably maintained at 60%-70%. The local high-altitude environment (altitude 3,800-4,200m) leads to large temperature differences (-10℃ to 25℃) and thin air, which puts forward higher requirements for the stability and energy efficiency of slurry pumps. The conventional slurry pumps previously used by the mine had serious wear problems: flow parts needed replacement every 1 month, and the low operation efficiency (only 68%) led to high energy consumption; 7-10 monthly unplanned shutdowns reduced production efficiency by 22%, causing monthly losses of about $110,000. As a key application field of slurry pumps, copper mine slurry transportation requires professional solutions to cope with high-abrasion working conditions.
We dispatched a professional technical team with rich experience in high-altitude mining projects to the mine for a 10-day on-site investigation, collecting more than 1,200 sets of key data such as slurry concentration, particle size distribution and transportation pressure. Combining the mine’s actual needs and referring to the advanced design concept of high-efficiency slurry pumps[2], we customized a solution centered on our XAH series high-efficiency slurry pumps: the core equipment adopted XAH-12/10ST horizontal centrifugal slurry pumps, which are specially designed for high-concentration, high-abrasion slurry transportation, with CFD-optimized hydraulic models to improve energy utilization[2]; the flow parts (impeller, pump casing) adopted A05 high-chromium alloy material, with surface hardness up to HRC 68-70, which significantly improved wear resistance[2]; we optimized the pump’s bearing structure and sealing system to adapt to the high-altitude temperature difference environment, ensuring stable operation under low-temperature conditions; in addition, the pump was equipped with an intelligent monitoring module to realize real-time monitoring of operation parameters, facilitating timely maintenance.
After 16 months of stable operation, our slurry pumps have achieved remarkable results: unplanned shutdowns have been reduced by 92%, flow part service life has been extended to over 17 months (17 times longer than conventional pumps), operation efficiency has increased to 82% (14% energy saving), and the mine’s annual cost savings in spare parts, maintenance and energy consumption exceed $1.3 million, with an investment return rate of 360%. The pumps have excellent adaptability to high-altitude and high-concentration working conditions, winning high recognition from the mine’s management. This cooperation has also laid a solid foundation for us to expand the South American copper mining market.
