Abstract
Boosting Iran's Iron Mining Efficiency, Overcoming Slurry Challenges with Professional Pumps - The Win-Win Cooperation Between XINGOU Slurry Pumps and an Iranian Iron Mine
As a key enterprise in Iran's iron mining industry, a large iron mine in Yazd Province is vital to the local industrial economy and iron and steel supply chain. Slurry transportation, core to its crushing, grinding, magnetic separation and tailings disposal, directly impacts production continuity, efficiency and cost control. Eighteen months ago, the mine struggled with frequent slurry pump failures and inefficient transportation, restricting capacity—until it partnered with us, a senior domestic slurry pump manufacturer. This collaboration solved its long-standing dilemmas and set a benchmark for professional slurry solutions in Iran’s iron mining sector.
The mine faced harsh challenges from local ore characteristics and environment: its iron ore slurry contained hard quartz gangue (up to 5mm), 68% fine particles (< 0.04mm), and solid content fluctuating 55%-70%. Local arid, dusty conditions (28-42℃, high wind) and slightly alkaline slurry (pH 8.0-8.8) accelerated wear and corrosion. Original pumps failed frequently: flow components needed replacement every 1.5 months, seals leaked often, and 7-9 monthly unplanned shutdowns cut efficiency by 22%, causing over $95,000 in monthly losses. Two international suppliers failed to deliver long-term stability, making slurry transport a development bottleneck.
Unlike suppliers offering only standardized products remotely, we focus on on-site diagnosis and customization. We sent 2 senior iron mining slurry engineers (13+ years of experience) to the Yazd mine for an 8-day investigation. Using professional equipment, they collected 1,100+ key data sets (concentration, particle size, alkalinity, pressure), analyzed faulty pumps, and identified root causes: insufficiently wear-resistant original materials (HRC 59-61), non-dust/alkali-resistant seals, and unoptimized hydraulic models for high-concentration slurry.
To address these pain points, we designed a customized solution: flow components used self-developed Cr30Ni5Mo2 alloy (surface-quenched to HRC 67-70), extending service life to over 16 months (8x longer than original); optimized hydraulic models and semi-open impellers boosted efficiency to 83% (13% energy savings); customized dust/alkali-resistant seals (modified PTFE + silicon carbide) eliminated leakage; a dust cover adapted to local conditions; and an intelligent monitoring system warned of potential failures, reducing unplanned shutdowns.
Adhering to strict ISO quality control standards, we conducted 72-hour continuous full-load performance tests on all customized pumps before shipment, simulating the high-temperature, high-concentration and alkaline working conditions of the Iranian iron mine to ensure that all parameters such as flow rate, head, efficiency and wear resistance fully met the design requirements and on-site operational needs. Meanwhile, considering the long-distance transportation and local installation needs, we communicated closely with the mine in advance, formulated a detailed installation and commissioning plan, and arranged professional technical personnel to go to the site synchronously with the equipment to minimize the installation cycle and reduce the impact on the mine’s normal production.
Our professional one-stop service ensured smooth cooperation: the team completed installation/commissioning in 3 days (2 days ahead of schedule) and provided 10-day on-site training for the mine’s staff, covering operation, maintenance and fault handling. This full-process support reduced operational pressure and laid a foundation for long-term stability.
In view of the long-distance overseas cooperation characteristics, we established an exclusive after-sales service mechanism for the Iranian iron mine, providing 24-hour online technical support with a response time of less than 2 hours; for emergency on-site service, we coordinated with local cooperative partners to ensure that technical personnel arrived at the site within 96 hours. When the mine encountered sudden slurry thickening due to abnormal ore composition, our technical team provided remote guidance in the first time, and dispatched personnel to the site quickly to adjust the pump’s operation parameters, resolving the problem in 6 hours and minimizing production losses. This efficient after-sales service won high recognition from the mine.
Up to now, our customized slurry pumps have operated stably for over 18 months, achieving remarkable operational results: unplanned shutdowns have been reduced by 93%, transportation efficiency has increased by 31%, annual cost savings from spare parts replacement, maintenance and energy consumption exceed $1.2 million, with an investment return rate of 320%, and the mine’s production capacity has increased by 19%. The pumps have excellent adaptability, which can calmly cope with fluctuations in slurry solid content (±7%) and alkalinity (pH 7.8-9.0), and maintain stable operation even in extreme high-concentration (72%) slurry scenarios and high-temperature dusty environments, winning full recognition from the mine’s management and technical team.
This cooperation demonstrated our professional strength in global iron mining slurry solutions—from on-site investigation and diagnosis to customization and full-service support. The mine is now our core Middle East customer, with long-term strategic cooperation in place. Its recognition has brought more opportunities in Iran’s iron mining sector, expanding our regional influence.
With years of experience in slurry pump R&D, manufacturing and global service, we are committed to providing efficient, stable and cost-effective slurry transportation solutions for global iron mining customers, overcoming geographical, environmental and operational challenges with professionalism, and creating win-win value for customers around the world.
