Abstract
Slurry Pump Cavitation: The Silent Killer & How to Stop It
Introduction
Cavitation is the number one enemy of slurry pump efficiency and lifespan. If your Warman AH series pump sounds like it’s pumping marbles or gravel, you are likely experiencing cavitation. This guide explains exactly why it happens and how to fix it permanently.
1. What is Cavitation in Slurry Pumps?
Unlike clean water pumps, slurry pumps deal with solids. Cavitation occurs when pressure drops below vapor pressure, forming bubbles that collapse violently against the impeller. In slurry pumps, this combines with abrasion to destroy metal rapidly.
2. Key Symptoms: Is Your Pump Suffering?
Noise: A distinct rattling or cracking sound (like rocks inside).
Vibration: Unusual spikes in vibration readings.
Performance Drop: Sudden decrease in flow or head pressure.
Impeller Damage: Check for "sponge-like" pitting on the impeller vanes (see image below).
3. Top 5 Causes of Cavitation
Insufficient NPSHa: The most common cause. The suction head is too low for the required flow.
Clogged Suction Line: Debris restricting flow into the pump.
Running Too Far Right on Curve: Operating at flow rates higher than design.
Air Leaks: Air entering through suction pipe joints or gland packing.
High Slurry Temperature: Increases vapor pressure, reducing available NPSH.
4. Step-by-Step Prevention & Fixes
Calculate NPSHa: Ensure Net Positive Suction Head Available exceeds NPSHr by at least 1.5 meters.
Reduce Speed: Lowering RPM reduces NPSHr requirements.
Check Suction Piping: Eliminate air leaks and remove blockages.
Throttle Discharge: Partially closing the discharge valve can move the operating point back to the safe zone (temporarily).
Conclusion
Don't let cavitation destroy your 3/2C-AH or 6/4D-AH impellers. Proper system design and monitoring are key. Need help calculating NPSH for your specific mine? Contact XingOu Engineering Team today.
